Bringing a Little Maui to Denton

Rich DeRosa presents two special musicians from the County of Maui, Hawaii. We are pleased to share their musical talents, and entertaining discussions with our friends here in Denton, TX.

Mike Lewis: A native New Yorker who has spent substantial time performing in Polynesia, Mike Lewis has recently moved back to Hawai‘i from the Pacific Northwest. He is the creator and band leader of Big Band Monday at Jazz Minds Honolulu and the Jazz Band Director at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Fluent in jazz trumpet, lead trumpet, and recording studio work, his resume includes touring and recording with Buddy Rich, Sarah Vaughn, Sammy Davis, Wynton Marsalis, Sonny and Cher, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Rosemary Clooney, The Temptations, Tony Bennett, Gladys Knight, and Bruno Mars.

Joie Taylor: Joie is a passionate Musician and a talented instrumentalist. Based in Maui,HI Joie Taylor has a storied history of live performances, musical arrangements, and professional recording sessions. With a professional career in Atlanta,GA, Ithaca, NY, India, and Maui she has toured the US and Europe.  A jazz foundation as an undergraduate music minor with Clark Atlanta University Jazz Orchestra founded by Dizzy Gillespie with all completely original scores instilled in her with strong technique, reading, ear, passion and soul of Jazz. As a member of the CAU Jazz Orchestra she toured Europe and played the following jazz festivals in the year 2000: The Hague, Montreux, Jazz Vienne, Paris, Brussels, Rome and Florence.  In addition as orchestra member she was in concert with Nancy WIlson, Gladys Night, Lou Rawls, Lilo Shifffron, and James Moody.
