UNT Zebras with Special Guest Michael League from Snarky Puppy
Date: | Thu, Oct 12, 2023 |
Time | 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM |
We are excited to host a 1 hour musical experience featuring the UNT Zebra's, followed by a 1 hour jam session with the founder of Snarky Puppy, Michael League.
UNT Regents Professor and Faculty Emeritus Dan Haerle formed The Zebras in 1980 to give keyboard players a special opportunity to work with electronic instruments. The group explored a wide variety of music, focusing on an eclectic mix of jazz fusion, funk, soul, and pop, often including a horn section and vocalists. Some semesters the Zebras would perform the music of a particular artist or group, such as Stevie Wonder, the Pat Metheny Group, Chick Corea, and Al Jarreau.
The Zebras album The Flamenco Jazz Project exemplifies the diversity of repertoire wielded by this outstanding ensemble. The current focus of the Commercial Music Lab repertoire is horn-based bands similar to the classics such as Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire, as well as newer contemporary bands like Bruno Mars. High-energy performances are what the Commercial Music Lab is known to deliver, and that UNT tradition continues.
Michael League is an American composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He is the bandleader of New York-based instrumental band Snarky Puppy. League formed Snarky Puppy in his freshman year of college at the University of North Texas, originally consisting of him and nine of his peers. He composed most of their original music, as well as produced all albums released by the band. Additionally he is the bandleader of the international music ensemble Bokanté. He also founded the band Forq with keyboardist Henry Hey, and is also an owner and founder of the record label GroundUP Music.[2] League has won five Grammy Awards
